Checking Your Significant Other’s Credit Score

Posted on May 8, 2007

I just got done reading Cap’s post titled Tuesday Train Wreck - The Financially Challenged Husband and it made me curious as to when other couples begin to talk about money, and go so far as to show one another their credit scores/reports.  Having just moved in with my girlfriend a couple of months ago we have been talking a lot about financial planning lately.  We went to Equifax and paid the $15 to see one another’s credit score, and fortunately there were no surprises as in the case of Cap in the above post.  In my opinion, before moving on much past serious dating, financial planning and commitment has to be a large part of that.  Finances can create such a strain in a relationship if not addressed.  How soon do others start to talk about money and financial planning in there own relationships?

Picture of Wealth had a post a few months ago that caught my attention on talking about finances with your significant other.

First off, I’d use https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp to get free copies of credit reports from each of the three agencies. Paying for them is silly.

I get free copies for both my wife and I on a 4 month schedule, so we get one from each agency once a year — Equifax in April, TransUnion in August, Experian in December. I even put it on my calendar so I don’t forget to do it. Gives you a good look at what’s happening with your credit throughout the year.

My wife is content to let me deal with finances as long as she doesn’t feel “constrained” too much. Luckily she’s as frugal as I am. We talk about finances from time to time, I have a hard time pinning her down to show her stuff — it mainly happens at tax time.

      Bob:

Definitely sounds like you and you wife are on the same page with finances, which is awesome. That’s a good tip to get one of the free credit reports every four months instead of all three at once. The only reason we paid was to get the credit score. We wanted to check and see where each of us stood as far as the score was concerned. The free version does not give you a score unfortunately. Now that we know one another’s score there is probably not a reason to pull it again unless there are significant negative changes, and hopefully that will not be the case.
