Save the Planet and Lower Your Utility Bill

Posted on May 11, 2007

Having grown up in the era of recycling and conservation, I continually feel like I could be doing more to save energy.  Watching my utility bill increase every year may also be a factor in wanting to find simple ways to cut back on energy consumption.  I have talked about some ideas I had for home improvements that would help save energy previously.  Always looking for new ideas, I recently stumbled across a post from FiveCentNickel.com highlighting 12 Simple Ways to Save Money on Utilities (and the Planet).  This post includes ideas that allow you to set the solution up and forget about it, which is key to following through with any energy saving technique.  If it takes more work to do, most people will not follow through long term.  Some of the ideas that I thought I would take a look at implementing include:

  • Install aerator screens on all of your faucets including laundry and utility sinks.  I know my laundry faucet does not have an aerator screen at this point.
  • Insulating attic access doors.  My attic access doors are just 1/2″ plywood and have no insulation on the back of them.
  • Plant trees in strategic locations.  I talked about this in my post on energy savings and still have not followed through with it.  This is one of the cheapest savings measures possible, and any related cost can be offset by the improved curb appeal it can provide for your home.
  • Install low-flow shower heads.  This is the only one I have trouble committing myself to.  I have an incredible shower head that pumps out the water.  It was there when I bought the house, and from the first shower I took with it I was hooked.

Go over to FiveCentNickel.com and check the rest of the 12 Simple Ways to Save Money on Utilities (and the Planet) post out.  If you have time check out this contest he is running.  I think it ends today so hurry up!
