Geezeo Mobile Beta: Easy Access To Account Balances From Cell Phone
Posted on June 9, 2007
I am a sucker for gadgets. Having the latest electronic gadget is one of my weaknesses. As soon as I buy them I try and make it do everything it possibly can, exploiting all possible functionality. Ever since I bought the Treo 650 about a year and a half ago, I always find myself looking for cool new ways to use it. I recently stumbled upon a link for Geezeo on The Frugal Law Student’s Massive Personal Finance Resource List. It was one of the only free personal finance tools for mobile devices. I once tried Pocket Quicken but honestly did not think I would use it enough from my mobile to justify the $39 cost. I think I would just be trying to show off to my friends with it at that point. Anyhow, I just gave the Geezeo Mobile a try and it’s very cool. Not something I would use everyday, but I think it will come in handy from time to time. I travel occasionally with work so to have account balances on my mobile is an added convenience. Banks seem to be moving very slow with rolling out mobile device online banking features. Geezeo will make due in the mean time. So here is how it works:
- Log in with Gmail account at the Geezeo website. (Or complete registration if you do not have Gmail)
- Add bank accounts and credit card accounts into Geezeo. (They use SSL and have security explanation)
- Send initial text message to 41411 with given Geezeo given code to register phone.
- Select cell phone carrier.
- Send a text message to 41411 and type the word “geezeo” (without the quotes) in body of the message. A text message will then be sent back to you with account balances.
- To see your updated account balances, all you have to do is send a text message to 41411 and type the words “geezeo update” (without the quotes) in body of the message, you will receive a confirmation message that says we are updating your balances. Once your balances have been updated, you will receive another text message with your updated balances.
It really seems to be that simple. I had no problems with the process, although my girlfriend had some trouble with the website allowing her to login to the secure area. Not sure what that was about. One interesting fact about the service is they give you the available balance on your credit card instead of the total amount charged. I wish they showed the total amount charged as the available balance is a misleading figure definitely implying you have more money. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Is this something people will use?
