Wedding Insurance: Is This Crazy Or Is It Just Me?
Posted on July 23, 2007
I thought I had heard of almost everything that could be insured after researching and writing this post on insurance a few months ago. Then I was reading the Sunday newspaper and found an article titled, “Play It Safe, Insure Nuptials.” The basic concept of wedding insurance is it can protect you against “disasters beyond your control” that happen on or before your wedding day. So my first question is what the heck does this cover? After some research here is what I have found wedding insurance generally will cover:
- Liability. Provides coverage in the event you are held liable for an injury or property damage, as well as protecting against alcohol related incidences. (I would find it difficult to believe your family would sue you for a “slip and fall” on your wedding day.)
- Weather. If weather prevents the wedding from taking place as it should have insurance will cover all reschedule fees. For example, if you are planning a winter wedding and the location you have selected is snowed in by a blizzard and inaccessible.
- Site. If the site you have selected does not have insurance (which seems unlikely) then your wedding insurance will cover reschedule fees and costs involved with moving locations.
- Sickness. If the bride, groom, or anyone closely involved with wedding become ill, then wedding insurance will cover fees associated with rescheduling to a later date.
- Vendor Absense. If a caterer, photographer, or other vendor does not show up this will cover the additional cost of getting a replacement.
- Military Leave. If the bride or groom is called to military duty this will cover costs associated with rescheduling.
The other question associated with wedding insurance is what is not included:
- Cold Feet. If the bride or groom chooses not to go through with the marriage.
- Normal adverse weather. Rain, snow, and heat are not covered. Hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes are covered.
- Ignorance. Your failure to give vendors notices of changes at appropriate times. Failure to get permits through the appropriate channels. This category is wide open…
In conclusion, be sure to read the fine print on any insurance policy you are planning to get as there are tons of exclusions. In disaster prone areas many times vendors have built in policies that will negate the insurance. Remember the basic rule of thumb with insurance is if you can afford to pay for the insured item yourself then it is probably not worth insuring.

What is the cost of getting a replacement if a vendor doesn’t show up at the wedding? It’s not a monetary cost as much as a logistical one.
If the caterer doesn’t show up on that day, how do you find another one within an hour who is going to have 200 meals prepared to the guests preferences?
Lazy Man: I agree you are pretty much screwed if your caterer does not show up on your wedding day. I guess some of the references I was reading were saying if a caterer bails on you a few days prior then getting someone in there to replace them will come at a high premium, and that is the portion the insurance would cover. I do not see the reality of needing this insurance if you go with reputable vendors and locations that have past proven experience. You just got married recently right? Did you ever have anyone offer or suggest to you wedding insurance?
Huh, that’s a new one to me…are there many people who are actually buying this?
I have to say, I think that most insurance plays into people’s fears….I wouldn’t buy wedding insurance because there is almost always something that will go wrong on the big day, no matter what.
Thanks for linking to my post.
I always find it amusing that people will buy almost anything as long as you call it “insurance”. Just like Jolynn said before me - selling insurance is all about selling fear. An astonishing percentage of people don’t look at this issue rationally.
